Finasteride is a prescription medication approved for the treatment of male pattern hair loss (androgenetic alopecia). It is specifically indicated for use in men only and is not for use by women. Finasteride belongs to a class of drugs known as 5-alpha-reductase inhibitors.
Finasteride works by inhibiting the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT). DHT is a hormone that plays a key role in male pattern hair loss. By significantly reducing DHT levels in the scalp, finasteride can help to slow down hair loss and, in some cases, promote hair regrowth in men.
For Women: Finasteride is contraindicated in women who are or may become pregnant. It can cause serious birth defects. Women should not handle crushed or broken finasteride tablets due to the risk of absorption through the skin.
For Men: Men over 45 should be aware that finasteride can significantly lower PSA (Prostate-Specific Antigen) levels, which is a factor in prostate cancer screening. Men over 55 have a higher risk of developing prostate cancer and should discuss this with their physician.
Like all medications, finasteride can cause side effects. Some men may experience a decrease in libido (sex drive), erectile dysfunction, or swelling in the hands or feet. Other possible side effects include weakness, dizziness, headache, runny nose, or skin rash. Allergic reactions, though rare, can occur and may present as hives, swelling of the face/lips/tongue, or difficulty breathing.
Finasteride should be taken exactly as prescribed by your healthcare provider. The typical dose for hair loss is one tablet taken by mouth once a day, with or without food. It is important to take finasteride consistently at the same time each day for it to be effective. Do not stop taking it without consulting your doctor. If you miss a dose, do not take a double dose simply resume your regular schedule the next day.
